The UK premiere of Joby’s one-act opera Everest is to be given in a semi-staged version with the BBC Symphony Orchestra at Barbican Hall, for one performance only under conductor Nicole Paiement, who premiered the work with Dallas Opera in 2015. Gene Scheer’s taut libretto relates the events of a tragic 1996 ascent of the mountain by a group of climbers, many of whom never returned. Following its US premiere one critic called it ‘Gripping, edge of your seat story-telling… If you want to see where opera is headed in the 21st-century, don't miss this production.’
