The BBC Symphony Orchestra and BBC Singers, along with soloists Michael Mayes, Veronika Haller, Andrew Bidlack and Craig Verm, will give the UK premiere of Joby’s 2015 one-act opera, Everest, in a semi-staged version. The libretto by Gene Scheer is based on the tragic events of a 1996 ascent of the mountain and the work will be preceded by Everest Prelude, a 15-minute orchestral work set against remarkable footage from Mallory and Irvine’s similarly ill-fated 1924 ascent.
